National Surfing Team Secures 8th Place Finish at ISA World Surfing Games October 08 2019
The National Surfing Team of Costa Rica, made up of of Costa Rica's top performing men and women surfers, secured an 8th place finish at the ISA World Surfing Games in Miyazaki, Japan. The event took place from September 7 - 15th this past month. Some of the best athletes from 55 teams from all over world competed in the week long event.
It was the highest attendance from participating countries. Many WCT professional surfers competed in an attempt to secure a spot for the Tokyo Olympics next year.
Carlos Muñoz and Brisa Hennessy were the top performers for the Ticos. Both advanced to the quarter finals to finish among the top 10 out of a field of more than 100 competitors for men and women. Jair Pérez and Leilani McGonagle both stood out with their top 25 performances. Noe Mar and Eva Woodland secured spots in the best 100.
Coach Jim Hogan is commended for helping to catapult the Dream Team to the Top Ten among other powerhouse teams, among them Brazil, the United States, Australia, Japan, France and Portugal. Team Japan took the honors of winning team of the ISA World Surfing Games this year.
With the 8th place finish, the National Surf Team improves upon last year's performance in Japan, where they missed the top ten by two positions, leaving in 12th place.
The next world event that will determine the last 10 seats for the Tokyo Olympic Games will be held next May.
The next team representation in Costa Rica will be held in a few weeks in Huntington Beach, California in the United States. The ISA World Junior Surfing Games begin on October 21st. Representative surfers for the Sub 18 Junior Cup were recently announced by the Federation of Surf Costa Rica and can be found here.
